These cone shaped stones are created several million years ago, from the volcanic ash of an active volcano. Back then the ash covered all the ground, created a thick layer. After a long period of time, rain and wind sculpted the soft volcanic ash, shaping it to become harder and sharper. The parts that we would see there is the overlying basalts. Because of this unique shape, the rock formation was named as fairy chimneys.

The whole bay includes more than 1,600 uninhabited islets and islands, which have been created by the repeated fall and rise of the ocean for more than 500 million years. However, in the Vietnamese tales and legends, a dragon which came from the heaven created all the rocks and islands to help Vietnam avoid the invaders. Therefore, the whole area was named Ha Long, which means a landing dragon.
